Trumpeter Z-24 aka Z-30, aka Z-25… And more

Day 383

Monday March 13, 2023

While the special military operation is still going on in Ukraine I was fully prepared last Monday morning to spray Vallejo black primer on Trumpeter HMCS Huron. However the temperature outside was still below freezing.

However the temperature outside was still below freezing.

So I decided to make homemade thinner instead.

What about the new project I had in mind?

The Z-24 aka Z-30 won’t be building itself so I have started it.

Then, after lunch, I saw that the temperature was rising…

Now how to paint the ship’s deck Deck Blue with an airbrush?

I have learned a few things by building my latest model kit.

Follow the instructions more carefully, especially with unused parts.

Glue the stand to better handle the model ship.

Use tweezers to hold small parts when glueing.

Let the glue set.

Work in 30-minute session only.

Wait before installing photo-etched parts whenever feasible.

Stick small parts on Tamiya tape to avoid losing them.

Footnote

I should have used due diligence. The Z-25 is much closer to the Z-24 I wanted to recreate. Its armament was different in 1944: twin cannons in the front turret and more anti-aircraft guns.

Oh well!

Wednesday 8 March 2023

My youngest son came to visit his parents which is great news.

I will be able to give him his birthday gift nine months in advance.

The Ju 88A-14 was just waiting for the installation of its four bombs. Fragile parts like the antenna and the pitot tube were added at the very end.

Once completed, it was glued on a frame with Clear Gorilla Glue.

I will also give him my ICM Bf 109F-4 as a companion…

Along with this book.

Thursday 9 March 2023

My son had bought four shadow box frames at Michael’s.

The Monogram F-5 had been previously built waiting for how to display it.

It was glued with Clear Gorilla Glue and it will now become part of my other son’s model kit shrine.

If he can find a place that is…

Friday 10 March 2023

The Z-30 has been placed on hold.

I have worked on the Athabaskan. First mixing homemade Deck Blue and painting the ship’s deck.

I just love painting…, but how to paint it the right way?

This way?

That way…

Or that way?

I will do it my way…

Saturday 11 March 2023

A picture is worth a thousand words…

The Athabaskan won’t paint itself.

First there’s the black demarcation line and the red-brown hull.

Black acrylic paint was painted with a paintbrush. After the paint had dried Tamiya 1mm tape was used.

Homemade red-brown was mixed and applied to the ship’s hull.

Leftover paint was used for the Z-30.

Sunday 12 March 2023

More masking before more painting…

I decided to use Vallejo eau-de-nile I had bought but had never used for the camouflage. Here it’s brushed painted.

It will be airbrushed next time.

Footnote

I wonder if it would be a good idea to glue my model kit on the cover jacket once it’s completed.

Day 376

Monday March 6, 2023

My grandchildren’s spring break is now over. I hope warmer weather will allow me to start phase 2 on Trumpeter HMCS aka Trumpeter HMCS Huron this week. While waiting for warmer temperatures to spray Vallejo black primer I think I would be a great idea to start a new build. I haven’t started yet.My interest was piqued four years ago when someone commented on my main blog where I had shared my research on HMCS Athabaskan.Willi wrote that his father was a sailor aboard torpedo boat T-24, the ship that had torpedoed HMCS Athabaskan, the Tribal class destroyer on which my wife’s uncle was a stoker (unless he had lied about it of course).I don’t think he had made it up. My wife still disagrees…Usually people will comment just once on my numerous blogs, then they disappear into oblivion. This time Willi had more to share which I had to share with the rest of the world on the Internet.https://willit24.home.blog/Then, one year later, someone else had read what I had shared on that blog. His father was also on the T-24.To be continued…?
